Synopsis
In an important city where mobility is ever more increasing and diverse, all different means of transport, pedestrians, cyclists, goods distribution operations, and vehicle parking need to share common public space in optimum conditions. In order to give a concrete answer to the necessities of the different urban agents, and with the will to improve traffic flow and mobility, the City Council of Barcelona created the multiple-use lane. This lane has been designed to adapt the space use to circulation, load and unload services and resident parking, taking into account hourly demand: it is open to traffic from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., to loading and unloading from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and to resident parking from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. It is considered an effective solution for intense traffic streets with important commercial activity lacking basic arrangements for goods delivery, and is already being used as such on 3,720 m of Barcelona main streets. Two kinds of traffic signs have been installed in order to mark off the lane:
Target groups: all citizens - shopkeepers
Fields: parking - goods delivery
