Some of the principal characteristics of the transport policy in Budapest are:
The Budapest Public Transport Union is an agreement among public transport companies in the Budapest region, aiming to create a unified tariff system covering all means of public transport. Indeed, 3 public transport companies operate in Budapest, but only 1 is under the direction of the municipality. There is a need of co-ordinating measures with other public transport companies. The principal objective of the transport policy in Budapest is to decreasing the level of air pollution. Public transports are well-developed in Budapest: buses, trolleybuses, tramway, metro, suburban trains. The public transport network represents 1,110 km (262 routes). Measures are implemented to take into account specific needs: buses with adjustable floor levels, pram and wheelchair-friendly kerbs, etc. Carry-your-bike possibilities on suburban trains have been implemented.
