Synopsis
In Italy, the context of the European Mobility Week 2002 was special as there was no national structure
for the promotion of and/or support of the event, either from the Ministry of the Environment (as has
happened in previous years on the Car Free Day) or from the associated National Bodies. As a result,
the promotion of the initiative started from Ferrara Council, which arranged the translation of the logo for
the event independently and made it available through its Web portal.
At a European co-ordination level,
the charter supported different thematics associated to each day of the European Mobility Week. Ferrara
followed the European charter:
- 16 September - "public transport": free buses and free taxi-bus for the
whole day and on all routes of Ferrara,
- 17 September - "ecologically compatible services for the city
and shopping": presentation of electric powered vehicles, hybrid buses, Coopser goods distribution
system using LPG-powered vehicles, and of Conad's system: you do the shopping by bike, and we'll
take it at home,
- 18 September - "cycling and solar power": presentation of the satellite-guided bicycle
powered by solar, free bikes at rental points, distribution in many primary and middle schools of the
book "W la bici", conference on solar thermal system,
- 19 September - "responsible car use": initiatives
to raise awareness and responsibility in the use of car, simulation of a residential street with traffic
calming,
- 20 September - "greenways": free guided tours by bike to find the greenways of Ferrara, conference
"The environmental planning of the city: case studies and prospective for Ferrara",
- 21 September -
"mobility and health": conference "Environmental pollution and health risks", Fit Walking: non-competitive
fast walking for health, Alter-Eco market with organic foods, fair trade products and ecological-natural
handicraft,
- 22 September - "In town without my car!": closure of the city to cars, bike race using bottle
tops, Let's fit that chain! - bicycle maintenance course open to all, Alter-Eco market.
Some permanent
measures have been implemented on the occasion of the European Mobility Week 2002 (see "obtained
