Synopsis
The Pedestrian Plan for the Municipality of Geneva, of which the adoption and realisation are in progress, is a wide ranging plan involving a programme of measures over 10 to 15 years aimed at revitalising walking as a transport mode in the urban environment. It unites and reinforces all the measures in the public domain in the local authority's territory that favour pedestrians in terms of safety, continuity and attractiveness of their journey, whether these are daily (neighbourhood) or occasional (on the footpaths network). Initiated by the Municipality of Geneva (Town Planning Department), the Pedestrian Plan maintains a dialogue between the various organisations and people involved (which regularly change or are subject to re-election). The plan has been conceived in an era of realism in urban planning which, through techniques and instruments that help explore the planning and development possibilities, aims to integrate all the stakeholders concerned, and to encourage communities to be part of the decision making process.
Two types of target group are identified:
The project covers the entire municipality and is integrated with the pedestrian networks planned in neighbouring local authorities. Geneva's planning directive is the first to be recognised at municipal level by the law.
Target groups: all citizens
