Synopsis
The old city centre of Ibiza preserves most of its original structure and is a particularly well suited area to be explored on foot. This district has a wide range of restaurants, and is also home to the Town Hall, the Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Archeological Museum. It has been closed to vehicle traffic by means of an automatic bollard system, which prevents the access of unauthorised vehicles. This action began in June 2000 and operates with two different intervals:
Taxis, residents and emergency services are given a specific identification card to access and park in the area. Access is also allowed to a special minibus that takes passengers from the Paseo de Vara de Rey (the nerve centre of the city) to the top of the old city. The bollard system is backed up by police control.
Target groups: all citizens
Fields: traffic calming / living streets - walking / pedestrians
