Synopsis
Koprivnica is a relatively small but quite an affluent urban centre in North-west Croatia. Over the past few years, the number of private cars has considerably grown and roads have been built to connect the town to the suburbs as well as to the relocated industrial plants. The need for a sustainable and efficient transport system has increased. Therefore some measures have been taken to ensure higher mobility and increase the quality of public traffic, enabling mobility for all citizens.
Public awareness campaigns have been organised aiming at promoting sustainable mobility (public transport, cycling, walking). The European Mobility Week was used to launch some of these campaigns and also measure the results of earlier campaigns and efforts. Moreover, air quality is monitored and results are published while the Municipality makes special efforts to promote cycling through intense building of cycling lanes.
One of the principal objectives of the transport policy of Koprivnica City is to provide all citizens with greater accessibility and equal opportunity of mobility. All reconstruction projects of roads and streets have to contain a provision for reduction of architectural barriers. Bicycle lanes and pedestrian crossings have been specially marked. City bikes have been introduced. Public transport was (only) introduced in 2002.
A network of rented bicycles has been introduced as mean of sustainable public transport in the City of Koprivnica. Various schemes of renting will be tried out to determine the most cost-efficient and practical one. Also various "stations" will be tested to determine the exact needs of the population. In the first year, 2002/2003 (test period), 50 bicycles will be available at 4 "stations" (railway station, main square downtown, city hospital, army headquarters).
