Synopsis
Koprivnica is a relatively small but fairly affluent urban centre in North-west Croatia. Over the past few years, the number of private cars has increased considerably and roads have been built to connect the town to the suburbs, and to the relocated industrial plants. The need for a sustainable and efficient transport system has grown. Some measures have therefore been taken to improve mobility and the quality of public transport, in order to provide mobility for all citizens.
Public awareness campaigns have been organised to promote sustainable mobility (public transport, cycling, walking, etc.). The European Mobility Week was used to launch some of these campaigns and also to measure the results of earlier campaigns and efforts. Air quality is also monitored (and the results published) and the Municipality makes a special effort to promote cycling through widespread construction of cycle lanes.
One of the principal objectives of Koprivnica City's transport policy is to provide all citizens with greater accessibility and equal opportunities for mobility. All road and street reconstruction projects must provide for a reduction of architectural barriers. Bicycle lanes and pedestrian crossings have been especially identified. City bikes have been introduced. Public transport was only introduced in 2002.
Measures to reduce architectural barriers are now included in all street and road reconstruction schemes, as well as in the construction of new streets and roads. Networks of barrier-free streets and roads will continually be extended, starting with the inner city towards outlying districts. All new public institutions will be provided with entrances and elevators for disabled, whilst existing public institutions will be urged to ensure the construction of barrier-free facilities within three years.
Target groups: disabled - all citizens
Fields: walking / pedestrians - cycling - urban planning
