Synopsis
Improving the safety of road users and improving health and quality of life are amongst the aims of the Kromeriz transport policy. These aims should be partially achieved through restrictions on access of traffic into the city centre, particularly for trucks, and through reductions in vehicle speeds. Others initiatives that can be cited are: the deliberate direction of cycle paths past the larger playgrounds and schools, and the deliberate installation of speed bumps near schools. These initiatives emerged from demands by local NGO's (Playgrounds, the Cycling with Helmets Initiative, Safe Community, Healthy City Plan).
The path for pedestrians and cyclists on Erbenovo waterfront in Kromeriz is a 5 km road along the embankments of the river Morava in a residential area. This initiative was introduced after the disastrous floods on the Morava river in 1997. At the time, there was no access to the river from the residential area, and this need was highlighted.
The residential area includes a block of appartments, a newly constructed old people's home and a large number of private family houses. The river bank is a very popular place for walking, and recreational boat trips can also be made on the river. On one side there is a sports centre. There is also a natural lake close to this path which is very popular with local people.
