EU Connects West-Midlands aims to demonstrate an innovative technology - the IRIS system - to examine its effects on reducing pollution and carbon emissions, improving road safety and traffic congestion and encouraging eco-driving behaviours. The IRIS system is an easy to install device fitted into individual vehicles. The IRIS system will monitor when drivers use vehicles and reward drivers for off-peak driving with cheaper car insurance and parking charges. These charges will be increased for driving in peak times.
At the same time, the system will measure car usage and therefore provide monitoring and reporting on carbon footprints, allowing recommendations to be made. The project will also measure the willingness of drivers to pay for road pricing if it was included as part of a bigger package in combination with benefits.
Partners could include: Transport or energy officers/organisations; fleet owners; researchers.
