In 2000, the Middelgrunden Wind Cooperative and Copenhagen Energy built a local offshore wind farm with a capacity of 40MW. The farm consisting of 20 wind turbines at 2 MW each is situated just 2 km outside the Copenhagen harbour.

Today the 20 turbines owned by Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative and Energi E2 are spinning just outside the Copenhagen Harbour. The wind farm provides 4% of the electricity for the city and adds a new landmark to Copenhagen.
