Goods Traffic Platform - Berlin, Germany
Type: CaseStudy
Synopsis
In order to handle commercial traffic in a sustainable urban and environmentally compatible manner, the Senate of Berlin is placing its bets on the understanding and co-operation of all stakeholders. For many shopping streets in the city, interest groups have been formed to elaborate specific city logistics concepts. In this process, the Senate mainly plays the role of a facilitator.
The roundtable "Goods Traffic Platform" which includes actors and stakeholders such as local administrative bodies, shopkeepers, the police, local chamber of commerce, etc. jointly decides on the introduction of a zone. Berlin's goods traffic platforms are an excellent example for public-private-partnership. The platform discusses, e.g. where are appropriate areas available in a district to ensure that delivery zones contribute to a significant improvement in relation to traffic congestion and the attributed loss of time and money.
Measures elaborated as part of the Berlin goods traffic platform are:
- Reducing the number of deliveries, either through co-operation between various recipients (with adjacent shops being supplied by the same carrier) or a combination of deliveries to a single recipient.
- The designation of special delivery zones. Key zones are clearly designated with a zigzag line on the road and a "no stopping" sign preventing any parking by private cars.
- Redesign of junctions with improved control of traffic lights and alterations of turn-off tracks. In the future, additional measures like the improvement of the logistics of buildings in co-operation with architects and stress analysts shall be implemented.
Target groups: shopkeepers
Fields: goods delivery
