Synopsis

Some of the principal objectives of the City of Kecskemét's transport policy are:

  • promoting a mode transfer away from the car towards more sustainable modes of transport,
  • improving health and the quality of life,
  • reducing air pollution.

The Municipality has consequently implemented measures such as:

  • the promotion of sustainable modes of transport and their advantages,
  • restricting access to the city center by motorists,
  • promoting the use of cleaner vehicles powered by various forms of energy (i.e. natural gas, biogas, biofuels, electricity, LPG, etc.),
  • re-distribution of the road network.

Cycling and sustainable modes of transport have been strongly promoted over the past years. The bike programme was introduced in 2000-2001:

  • the Municipality developed the bicycle route network,
  • organisation of Bicycle tours, for example:
    • a bicycle tour for students of Kecskemét to the Arad (Romania) Hungarian Martyrs Memorial,
    • programmes organised by the Kecskemét House of Nature,
  • the 2003 "By Bike to School" action within the framework of the European Car Free Day and Mobility Week campaigns,
  • creation of secured and guarded bicycle parks near railway stations (especially in areas with high traffic congestion and in the city centre).
