Synopsis

The London Borough of Southwark is a diverse borough stretching southward from the Thames. The majority of Southwark is medium to high density residential and commercial in the north with medium to low density residential in the south. The main objectives of Southwark transport policy are the following:

• to develop a sustainable transport system for the borough which reduces traffic congestion and overall levels of traffic,
• to enhance safety and security and provide better travel information and waiting environments at appropriate locations for all forms of travel in the borough,
• to work with business and other relevant organisations to support the local economy by improving the reliability and efficiency of distribution of goods and services within and through the borough,
• to develop a transport system in Southwark which provides a choice of sustainable transport modes for everyone, giving equal access to employment, shopping, housing, health leisure facilities for all,
• to develop and promote alternatives to car travel so that the proportion of trips made by car in the borough is reduced.

In 2001, through their links with the MOSES project (mobility services for urban sustainability - a research and demonstration project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme), the London boroughs of Southwark and Sutton became the first London boroughs to sign up jointly to a car sharing scheme that will save people money, cut congestion and reduce pollution. This initiative is an obvious contribution to the achievement of the above mentioned objectives.
