Type: CaseStudy

View the Case Study

Synopsis

In the Bus Rider project, the aim was to convert half of a group of regular commuters to go by public transport after a one or two month trial. 70 former car commuters signed an agreement to go to work by public transport for a period of two months. The Bus Rider project is part of LundaMaTs, the city's sustainable transport strategy that was introduced in 1997. In 1999 several projects were initiated, such as a mobility centre, the bicycle town, and walking and cycling to school. Since then, a large number of activities - infrastructure measures as well as soft measures - have been carried out. The principal objectives of the city's transport policy are:

  • better public transport with improved intermodality for city buses and regional transport services,
  • environmentally friendly car traffic (eco cars, car sharing, etc.),
  • bicycle city (improved cycling infrastructure, etc.),
  • more sustainable commuter transport
  • urban planning.

The Bus Rider Project was carried out by Lund's Mobility Centre, which aims to trigger and assist in the development of more sustainable transport in Lund, through mobility consulting, information services and awareness raising about environmental and health implications of traffic. The Bus Riders project was tested in Soedra Sandby, a village near Lund which functions as a kind of laboratory as to what extent it is possible to change travel modes only by combining different mobility management activities.
