Voiture & Co car sharing, a concept that is gaining ground - Nanterre, France
Type: CaseStudy
Synopsis
Voiture & Co is a non-profit making association that promotes car sharing amongst students in partnership with the Municipality of Nanterre. Voiture & Co runs a solidarity-based car sharing scheme intended for students as well as for the academic and administrative staff of the University of Paris X Nanterre. The scheme is also open to employees working within the area upon application to the association. Other services include: car sharing services at night for student parties and receptions in the Ile-de-France Region and for some other cities in France (Nice, Marseille, Lille, Poitiers, Bordeaux). The Municipality is also planning to introduce a PDU (Plan de Déplacements Urbains - Urban Travel Plan) and has started to work on this. The PDU is a guideline document defining organisational principles for passenger transport, transportation and delivery of goods, traffic and parking. It also sets out targets for sustainable development. The stated objectives for the municipality of Nanterre are:
- to improve and increase the provision, accessibility and use of public transport systems and soft modes of transport,
- to redefine street priorities in order to re-organise inter-district traffic and to reduce through traffic in districts, whilst reducing the use of private cars and the associated pollution,
- to redefine parking provision by taking public transport services into account and by distinguishing between local residents, travellers passing through and visitors, and without having an adverse effect on the local economy,
- to re-organise the transportation and delivery of goods.
Target groups: employers / employees - youth / students
Fields: responsible car use / mobility plans
