Car sharing scheme - Odense, Denmark
Type: CaseStudy
Synopsis
The principal objectives of Odense's transport policy are: to ensure a modal shift from private car to sustainable modes of transport (bus, bike, walk) and to improve quality of life and health. Odense plans to improve transport provision for all public and commercial use. Its aims are to reduce the environmental nuisance, address the use of cars related to workplaces and improve cycling facilities, with a special focus on shorter trips. The overall commuter policy initiates a sustainable traffic policy based on the management of collective mobility initiatives designed to limit the use of the car.
The principal characteristics of this transport policy are:
- the priority given to the light trafficants (children, cyclists, elderly),
- car pooling and car sharing promotion,
- public transport promotion and improvements,
- coordination of public and private transportation,
- no more extension in the number of parking places and better relocation of the parking places in the city centre
- involvement in sustainable urban mobility campaigns such as "In town without my car!", "Walking Bus", "Bike to Work", "Freewheeling", "Cycle trailer", and in sustainable urban mobility projects such as "Safe Routes to Schools".
The City of Odense took the initiative to implement the "Car sharing in Denmark" project. The aim was to introduce a new transport system as an alternative to private car use. Car sharing is mainly used by people who do not have a daily need for a car but anyway appreciate to get access to a new car once in a while. The project was funded by the Ministry of Environment, which allowed the setting up of a Car Club managed by a private operator.
