Synopsis

The city of Olomouc lies in the heart of the Haná region. Today, the city is the fifth largest city in the Czech Republic and the capital of the Olomouc Region. Considering the inland location of Olomouc, its outer transport link is excellent. Olomouc is also an important railway junction with the main railway station being located near the city centre. The basic traffic planning policy for Olomouc involves not only adapting the city to the increasing automobile traffic, but also involves systematic support for more environmentally-friendly means of transport (public transport, cycling, walking).

The Accessible Olomouc project contributes to the creation of a long-term design for improving the quality of life for handicapped citizens. It involves disabled people (especially wheelchair users and users of walking aids), people who find walking difficult, the blind and partially-sighted, people with hearing difficulties, pregnant women and mothers with small children (and prams), senior citizens and people with temporary mobility difficulties after injury.

The project is focused on:

• removing existing architectural and technical barriers that can interfere with the everyday life of the handicapped persons, and implementing measures to prevent the appearance of these barriers,
• eliminating potential barriers to information and communication,
• enlightening the general public about the lives and needs of their handicapped fellow-citizens.

The stated objective is to create equal opportunities of movement, transport and access to information for all of Olomouc's groups of citizens.
