Horizon2020 – what’s in it for local authorities?

Horizon2020, the European Commission’s flagship research and innovation funding programme has launched, aimed at shaping the future of scientific endeavor in the European Union and beyond.

Horizon2020 builds upon the successes of FP7 and the Intelligent Energy Europe programme, as the focus moves from research & development in public-private partnerships to market uptake activities.

The three key priorities for Horizon2020 are 1. Excellent science, 2. Industrial leadership, and 3. Societal challenges. Of these, Societal challenges includes many elements of the former Intelligent Energy Europe programme under the heading Secure, clean and efficient energy. Within this, calls for proposals in 2014-2015 include energy efficiency (21 topics), smart cities and communities (6 topics) and low carbon energy (22 topics).

Local authorities may be particularly interested in the following topics, currently open for proposals:

EE7: Enhancing the capacity of public authorities to plan and implement sustainable energy policies and measures

EE8: Public procurement of innovative sustainable energy solutions

EE9: Empowering stakeholders to assist public authorities in the definition and implementation of sustainable energy policies and measures

EE10: Consumer engagement for sustainable energy
